WORKING WITH MEDICAL TRAUMA & HEALTH-RELATED CONDITIONS USING EMDR 26th February 2027 9.30-5pm
A Live Online EMDR Masterclass / CPD Day with Kate Chartres (EMDR UK Ass CPD points requested).
Illness, medical treatment and healthcare experiences can be profoundly traumatic - yet medical and health-related trauma can be overlooked, misunderstood or difficult to conceptualise within standard trauma frameworks.
This one-day live online masterclass explores how EMDR can be adapted and applied when working with medical trauma, health-related conditions and the psychological impact of illness and healthcare experiences.
Designed for EMDR therapists who want to feel more confident working at the intersection of trauma, physical health and healthcare, the day will combine theory, clinical reasoning and practical strategies that can be taken directly into practice.
About the Trainer
Kate Chartres is an EMDR Accredited Consultant and Clinical Supervisor and Facilitator, therapist, masterclass trainer and former Nurse Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry, now working independently in private practice.
Kate spent 10 years working as a Nurse Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry, developing extensive experience at the interface between physical and psychological health. This included working with people experiencing complex medical presentations, persistent physical symptoms and the psychological impact of illness, diagnosis, treatment and healthcare experiences.
Her current clinical and teaching work has a particular focus on trauma and physical health, including medical trauma, Persistent Physical Symptoms (PPS), Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), chronic pain and other health-related conditions.
Alongside EMDR, Kate draws on her wider training and experience in somatic and nervous-system-informed approaches, bringing an integrative understanding of how trauma can be experienced through both mind and body.
Kate is an experienced EMDR facilitator and educator and has presented her work nationally and internationally. Her teaching style is practical, accessible and firmly grounded in clinical practice, with an emphasis on helping therapists understand not simply what to do, but why they might choose a particular intervention, when they might adapt standard EMDR practice, and how to respond to the individual client in front of them.
By the end of the day, participants will be better able to:
Recognise the different ways in which medical and health-related experiences can become traumatic.
Develop an EMDR-informed case conceptualisation for clients presenting with medical trauma and health-related difficulties.
Identify appropriate EMDR targets when there may be multiple medical events, procedures or cumulative experiences, rather than one obvious index trauma.
Consider how illness, diagnosis, treatment and healthcare experiences can affect safety, identity, autonomy and trust in the body.
Work with fears relating to symptoms, recurrence, deterioration, treatment and future health.
Understand the role of ongoing threat and uncertainty when the feared event cannot simply be categorised as something that happened in the past.
Adapt preparation, stabilisation and resourcing to meet the needs of clients living with physical symptoms, fatigue, pain or reduced capacity.
Consider practical adaptations to EMDR processing when physical symptoms or health conditions affect the client's ability to engage with standard procedures.
Work sensitively with experiences of medical invalidation, loss of control and difficult or traumatic interactions with healthcare professionals and systems.
Use EMDR clinical reasoning to determine when to process, when to stabilise and when adaptation may be required.
Develop practical strategies and interventions that can be integrated into clinical practice following the training.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Medical and healthcare experiences do not occur in a vacuum.
Throughout the day, particular consideration will be given to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and the ways in which identity, culture, communication, disability and systemic inequalities can influence both healthcare experiences and subsequent trauma.
We will consider how factors including race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, neurodivergence, socioeconomic circumstances, culture and previous experiences of healthcare systems may affect whether someone feels heard, believed, safe and able to access appropriate care.
The training will encourage therapists to remain curious about the client's individual experience rather than assuming that the same diagnosis, procedure or healthcare event will have the same meaning for everyone.
Attention will also be given to accessibility and reasonable adaptations within EMDR, recognising that some clients may need the standard protocol delivered differently in order to participate safely and effectively.
How the Training Works
This is a live online CPD day, allowing you to attend from wherever you are.
The day will include teaching, clinical examples, case conceptualisation and practical ideas for working with medical and health-related trauma.
Can't attend every minute live?
The session will be recorded and made available to registered participants to watch back, so you can revisit the material after the training.

If you already use EMDR but sometimes find yourself wondering:
“Where do I start when the trauma is medical?”
“What do I target when there have been years of illness or treatment?”
“How do I work with trauma when the threat isn't entirely in the past?”
“How do I adapt EMDR when someone is living with pain, fatigue or physical symptoms?”
- this masterclass has been designed to help you answer those questions. This will be interactive so attendance LIVE is required.
